28 April 2015 is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has regarded this as a yearly international campaign since 2003. This day is used to highlight the importance of health and safety in the work place.

In order to promote health and safety in the work place, we have comprised a list of tips for the work place:

1. Make sure you understand what your job entails. Knowing the possible risks you could face, especially if you are working in a hazardous environment can enable you to know how to prevent injuries or diseases.

2. Follow safety procedures. Rules and instructions are mostly made you to keep you safe therefore you should follow rules and regulations in order to keep safe.

3. Perform hygienic practices. This is important for the prevention of diseases.

4. Keep your working space clean and clutter free. This will not only decrease your chances of accidents but also reduce bacteria thus preventing diseases from spreading.

5. Wear the correct safety clothing and use the correct equipment for the work you do. If you are doing a hazardous job, wear protective clothing: gloves, respirator, safety glasses, fire protection equipment, etc.

6. Make sure the work place ergonomics are fitting. This includes the desk or equipment you use as well as work place lighting.

7. Do not lift objects that are too heavy. If you are able use mechanical equipment to pick up or carry, such as: forklifts, wheelbarrows, cranes, etc.

8. Come to work sober. Do not consume any substances that could negatively affect the way you work.

9. Allow yourself short breaks. This will prevent injury and stress. Complete your most difficult tasks when you are able to work and concentrate best.

10. Be familiar with your rights. Do not let anyone overwork or take advantage of you.
